The Art of Stillness

Have you ever considered if true happiness might be found in moments of quiet and stillness?

Being around books is a way to incorporate stillness moments in my life. I like to peruse the titles on my bookshelf because it’s so quiet.

I was reunited recently with this book, “The Art of Stillness: Adventures in Going Nowhere.” Published by TED Books, this short but powerful read comes from a seasoned travel writer, Pico Iyer.

Iyer takes a different route in this book.

He explores the concept that true richness in life comes not from constant movement, but from moments of stillness and reflection. Drawing on his experiences and those of others, he illustrates how staying still can bring clarity and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Here are three main points that resonated with me:

  1. Inner Journeys Can Be as Rewarding as Outer Ones: Iyer argues that stillness offers a different kind of adventure—an inner journey. In moments of quiet, we can explore our thoughts, emotions, and desires more deeply than when we’re constantly on the move.
  2. The Power of Presence: Being present in the moment allows us to truly connect with our surroundings and the people in our lives. Iyer emphasizes that stillness can enhance our relationships and deepen our appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.
  3. Finding Clarity Through Stillness: Iyer shares how many of life’s answers come to us when we stop searching frantically and allow ourselves to be still. This pause can bring clarity and insight that is often elusive in our busy lives.

“The Art of Stillness” is a gentle reminder to be more present, to savor the simplicity of the moment, and to appreciate the richness of a life not dominated by constant motion.

As I reflect and remind myself to slow down, I find Iyer’s insights both timely and timeless. His book is a valuable guide for anyone looking to find balance in a world that never seems to stop.

By embracing a slower pace, we can appreciate the journey, not just the destination.
